Animacy
This work primarily features a coil-built ceramic form with human hair and plant fibers interwoven onto the surface of the work. The form of the piece functions as my personal symbol for animacy, a concept I associate with the notion that both living and non-living entities can possess agency. Humans, like both living and non-living natural entities, are geological agents. Human hair, when harnessed with an eccocentric mindset, can adsorb 9 times its own weight in oil which has spilled into our waterways. I am greatly interested in the relationship that human hair shares with oil, and how that may be used to create positive changes in our environment.
